In today's world, activity is at the forefront, be it work, physical activity, making more money etc. If someone is down we cheer them up and ask them to do some fun activity. "Got a weekend coming up, let's do something interesting, either a side project or a family vacation". This is how we like to spend our time, with some sort of activity. You might ask, what about sleep, is it not stillness ? In sleep we are not conscious.
For a change, let's try this. Sit idle without any activity, not even thoughts. I know, saying don't have thoughts is kind of an overstatement. Instead try this, don't pay attention to your thoughts. Let me explain what I mean by it. In a day, lot of thoughts come in our mind, but we end up thinking only about a few of them, why ? because we engaged with only those thoughts, rest of them we ignored unconsciously.
What good does this do ? Observe your thoughts, they are always about things we already know, never completely new. When we sit idle, there is a scope of knowing or experiencing something other than our thoughts. Thoughts take up a huge part of our life. Take a minute and think when was the last time you were not having any thoughts. Think again if you are unable to think of any such moments. Unconsciously during moments like watching Sunrise/Sunset, going to the beach, spending time with loved one's etc, we might have experienced what it feels to have no thoughts.
I tried this a lot of times. What I realized is how many thoughts keep bubbling up, it's like an endless thing. This brought into perspective, what our minds are capable of. Just non stop recycling of thoughts.
Try this for a change and let me know your experience.
